Knit a Cornish Gansey Square for 3 Bags Full

gansey squares

Well, It is coming up for this year's 3 Bags Full Wool Market once more and as per usual, the team are planning something special which everyone can get their needles out and get involved in. This year we are yarn bombing Liskeard town and the good natured shop owners have allowed us enhance their shop windows with knitted creatures, food, flowers and the like. If this is your favourite thing to knit, then head over to the website (link above) where you can pick up patterns and have some fun. However, as an added project, we thought it would be great to use our own Cornish Gansey stitch patterns to knit squares which initially will be used for some of the yarn bombing projects but will then be sewn together and donated to the Syrian Refugees via Open Heart, Open Borders.

Over the next four Mondays, I will reveal a new gansey square pattern with accompanying chart and text for you to knit. Originally, ganseys were knitted in 5ply yarn but I have decided to use double knitting weight yarn for two reasons- the first being bigger squares more quickly and the second- we all have loads of DK in our stash don't we! I am going down a needle size to a 3.5mm needle as the tighter tension will show up the purl stitches more effectively. Using Mary Wright's wonderful book Cornish Guernseys & Knitfrocks, as design reference, I proudly present this weeks square- Looe: Eddystone which uses the raised purl stitches to suggest little lighthouses across the fabric.

The finished squares measure 6.5 x 6.5 in / 17 x17 cm and uses 3.5mm needles and any DK weight yarn
